The Alnwick Brewery Company can trace its brewing roots back to the mid 1800s prior to mergers and formation as a limited company in 1890. Successful until 1978 when it was acquired by Drybroughs; it was subsequently closed with the sale to Allied Breweries in 1986 in favour of their focus on production elsewhere.
There was at that time market reaction to the growing demise of cask ale production generally (CAMRA was established in 1971) and Alnwick Brewery was subsequently relaunched in 2005 by the son of Alnwick Brewery’s last managing director, Ian Lindsay.
In 2011 the company was invested in by local residents and became part of the Harry Hotspur Group in 2013. Harry Hotspur Holdings Ltd is a company dedicated to the preservation of Northumbrian business and its historical culture.
In 2016 Alnwick Brewery merged with the VIP Brewery Company which was located just a short distance from Alnwick’s town centre, at Hawkhill. It is from here that the business successfully operates to this day.
The brewery focuses on quality and consistency in its products. Through demand the operation has extended its capacity to embrace different styles of product in cask, keg, bottle, can and mini keg. To date the brewery has won an impressive list of regional and national awards which is pleasing testament to the quality we strive for.
In 2021 the brewery launched its bottle shop and tap room on site where visitors are able to sample and enjoy products in a delightful, rustic, country setting on Alnwick’s doorstep; one befitting our history and ethos.
It is from here, at the heart of Northumberland that we brew, and from the heart.
Please do enjoy these products. We look forward to meeting you at our Tap.
